Some of the Golden Bananas would be a nightmare to get, but I already had 100 and won't dare attempt 100% completion. It was also difficult to get enough bananas for the boss, unlike every other level. (I did get a lucky shot for the cannon thing hitting the last target when I had one cannonball left)Ĭrystal Caves was annoying with the big enemy sending stalactites falling (who I could have killed IF, by some glitch, that one giant boulder hadn't disappeared, I later revisited the level and killed him, but ironically that was the last thing I did there as I'd already beaten the boss, who was mercifully easier than the last three). Gloomy Galleon wasn't super fun but usually not super annoying, for a water level. Diddy Kong's cave was annoying (mainly crossing the narrow path at an awkward angle within the time limit) but aside from that.

The temples were all right too, and once I figure out how to get into "The Temple", those Golden Bananas were pretty easy, as was the part where you have to "Get out!" Hated the second Dogadon fight, though.Īngry Aztec was for the most part enjoyable with the whole Egyptian theme to it (well, it's supposed to be Aztec).

There were a few minigames I felt compelled to skip but I had more than enough Golden Bananas at this point and could've gone the whole level without getting any if I wanted.įungi Forest wasn't nearly as annoying as TV Tropes made it out to be, aside from the rabbit race and the spider battle (spider wasn't super creepy but it was a little hard to take out the smaller spiders without taking damage). It has kind of a creepy atmosphere, but in a fun way for me, like the Halloween level. I didn't even find Mad Jack overly difficult either, though he certainly could be challenging, but once you get his attack patterns down he's not that tough and is probably the most fun boss for me to fight.Ĭreepy Castle, I know some people hate it too and count it a "That One Level" but I found it much more relaxing and enjoyable than its predecessor, and I had many bananas to spare. It is sometimes easy to forget what leads where but also kinda fun to see what's through each door and hole. I know people hate Frantic Factory but I found it pretty fun to explore. Frantic Factory (aside from second round of Donkey Kong) Already the issues above are present, and the pressure is sure to increase with each additional Kong.ġ. So far I’ve unlocked Donkey (who is available at the start of the game), Diddy (who is unlocked a little ways into Jungle Japes), and Tiny (who I unlocked in Angry Aztec). Instead I have to constantly be switching Kongs, remembering to return to places later, backtracking, and by the time it all adds up, I just get tired.

But no, I can’t just get everything if I’m skilled enough. I would adapt myself, like in Banjo, to enjoying the worlds whilst simultaneously collecting everything in sight. I would simply maximize my effectiveness in traversing the levels over time. If the collectibles just weren’t color-coded, I wouldn’t feel so overwhelmed. Once I have every character, I will be forced to essentially play the game five times in order to beat it. Even as I chug along on my merry way through the worlds, I have this sense of dread within me, knowing that I’d have to comb every single polygon of the level in order to complete the game.

Or rather, to be more specific, the fact that it blocks you off from so many of them at a time. However, as has been made infamous by this point, the sheer amount of collectibles is very intimidating. Level design that creates an incredibly enjoyable experience that firmly stands out above the crowd. Masterful use of character animations, voice lines/clips, etc to provide that unmistakable charm and charisma they were famous for. Fantastic music composed by the phenomenal Grant Kirkhope, inspired by the legendary David Wise. And it’s really good! Just what you’d expect from Rare at their peak. I’ve been able to play DK64 for the first time today. So after the long, boring, dreary wait, my Expansion Pak finally arrived.
